The challenging interiors improvement of a 250 sqm private villa, developed by SMAA architects with brilliant ideas and bold decorative solutions.

DESCRIPTION
from the architect's statement

When we first visited the house, the main challenge we had to face was changing the perception of the interior space. The interior, although with generous surfaces, was suffering because of the partition system. Considering this, all the partitions of the ground floor were taken down, because they formed physical and visual barriers. The new logic of the partition is airy, and doesn't induce a feeling of confinement. The resulting space is mainly defined by fluidity and visual permeability. The only separations we left are the two glass sliding panels, which simply disappear inside furniture pieces. They are necessary to isolate the kitchen and the entrance from the living space, but the visual link is maintained through the glass. Thanks to the finishes we used, the living area results to be more spacious. Both the floor finish - that is continuous throughout the ground floor - and the finishes used in the kitchen and in the entrance hall allow these two zones to visually participate in the perception of the living area.

The entire second floor is solved as a matrimonial area. The space adjacent to the staircase becomes an intimate lounge area, directly linked to the main bedroom. This second living space is visually separated from the traffic area through a definite change in the finishes, both on the walls and ceiling and on the floor. The main bathroom covers the space of the old bathroom and the dressing room, which were too small and impractical. Consequently, we had to move the dressing room and make room for a spacious bathroom. The main area is dedicated to a generous bathtub and a large sink, while both the toilet bowl and the shower have a separate dedicated space, which is closed with glass doors.

For this project, all the furnishing, interior joinery and all the sanitary items were custom made, in order to come as a response to the necessity of a fluid space, with visual links between different areas. The furnishings are designed after rigorous rules, creating rhythm and unifying areas. The atmosphere is completed through punctual design elements, like the dining furnishing, the Lithos Design "seta" stone texture decorating the TV wall, the white glass ceiling with black joints above the sofa or the small accessories.
